In every industry, from healthcare to hospitality, tech to teaching, one principle rings true: “If ya want good people, ya gotta pay for ‘em.” It’s more than just a catchy phrase — it’s a foundational truth of business and organisational success. Yet, far too often, employers overlook this simple logic in favor of cost-cutting, only to pay the price in turnover, poor performance, and stagnation. Good people — skilled, motivated, dependable employees — are not an expense. They are an investment. The fact of the matter is that how to convince the people who are good at counting beans the next door (the Finance Gurus)?

Cheap Isn’t Always Good

One of the most costly misconceptions at the leadership level is that keeping wages low improves the bottom line. In the short term, perhaps yes. But over time, underpaying employees leads to high turnover, poor morale, lower productivity, and a tarnished brand reputation. Recruiting, onboarding, and training new hires repeatedly can cost far more than paying a competitive salary right at the very outset.

When organisations settle for the cheapest labor, they often sacrifice reliability, experience, and initiative. Mediocre performance becomes the norm, and managers spend more time addressing errors and absenteeism than driving innovation or growth. That’s the hidden cost of cutting corners: instead of building a team that pushes the organisation forward, leadership finds itself constantly plugging leaks.

What “Enthusiasts” Bring to the Company?

What exactly do we mean by “Enthusiasts? These are the employees who show up on time, stay late when needed, anticipate problems before they arise, and treat customers and coworkers with respect. They’re self-motivated, engaged, and loyal. They innovate. They care.

These employees make companies better — from the frontline staff who shape customer experience, to the skilled technicians who maintain quality standards, to the managers who foster healthy team dynamics. But they don’t just appear. Enthusiasts are the result of intentional hiring, thoughtful training, and yes — competitive compensation.

Pay Package Reflects Value

Pay is more than a paycheck. It’s a sign of worth. When employers pay well, they’re saying, “We value what you do.” This recognition breeds loyalty and performance. Employees who feel appreciated are more likely to stay, grow, and give their best.

In contrast, when employees feel underpaid and undervalued, dissatisfaction creeps in. According to multiple studies, compensation remains one of the top reasons people leave their jobs. And once an organisation gains a reputation for being cheap, word spreads fast. The best talent looks elsewhere, and the talent that does stay is less likely to be fully committed.

The restaurant that cuts costs by hiring inexperienced servers might save on payroll, but lose thousands in botched orders and get you unhappy customers. The startup that skimps on developer salaries may find its app full of bugs and behind schedule. The non-profit that pays staff barely above minimum wage may struggle to meet its mission due to burnout and turnover.

Conversely, companies that pay well often see an impressive return. Costco, for example, has long been recognised for paying above-average wages in retail — and has some of the lowest turnover and highest productivity in the industry. The lesson is clear: “Good people aren’t a luxury, they’re a necessity”. And when you compensate them accordingly, they return the favor in performance and loyalty.

Beyond Salary

Pay matters, but compensation isn’t just about salary. Benefits, flexibility, growth opportunities, and a supportive culture also play vital roles. However, these should complement — not replace — fair pay. Perks are not a substitute for a livable, competitive wage.

Investing in good people also means creating an environment where they can thrive. That includes regular feedback, chances for advancement, and leaders who listen. But without competitive pay as the foundation, even the best culture will struggle to retain top talent.

It’s time to stop seeing wages as a burden and start seeing them as the cornerstone of organisational excellence. You can’t expect first-class service, innovation, and loyalty from people who are being treated like afterthoughts on the balance sheet.

If you want the kind of people who’ll treat your customers well, build your brand, and stick with you through challenges — pay them. Pay them well. Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s the smart thing to do. In the end, it’s simple: you get what you pay for. And if you want good people, you gotta pay for ‘em.
